cost reduction and control is essential to the success of business,
especially to the small business. when the economic growth currently is slow and market
competition is more intensive, reducing costs has been critical to many small businesses’
survival and growth. in this seminar, four experts will discuss how to reduce costs of
small businesses from different perspectives, including accounting, management, and
technologies/methods. they will share their extensive working experience and insightful
knowledge in the fields with audience. this forum will also provide participants an
opportunity of networking with people from different backgrounds in business and cultures.
speakers' profile
dr. philip borden currently is the principal of d-phil.biz, a company specializing in
providing professional consulting services to governments and universities, plus private
ventures, non-profits, and their boards. for seven years, until january, 2003, he was
executive director of the women enterprise development corporation, following three years
at the helm of asian american economic development enterprises. he founded high technology
companies in circuit design, laser applications, manufacturing integration, and research
and implication of artificial intelligence software. his companies have been cited for
their quality, excellence, and innovation in ibm’s baldtidge and received national awards
from business week, nbc, and cbs news. dr. borden was trained in history, mathematics,
and business management in the united states, and at oxford. he was a professor at ucla
and usc. dr. borden has presented over 75 papers on management and technology topics to
mba students and professional associations in the us and world.
mr. josh hodge has been a very successful entrepreneur he received b. s. in economics
with an emphasis in entrepreneurship from the wharton school of the university of pennsylvania.
he first worked in commercial lending for three years at first interstate bank, sold personal
computers to large companies for four years at computer city, and managed a sales office for
two years, also with computer city. with the appropriate experience, knowledge, and confidence,
mr. hodge, along with his late wife, founded inacomp of torrance in october of 1990.
his company targeted large companies in southern california and grew quickly over the next
nine years, providing computer products and services to ten large companies, including toyota,
sempra energy, and countrywide. mr. hodge sold his company in february of 1999 to a large
publicly held company. since the sale of his business, mr. hodge has traveled extensively.
he is currently exploring business opportunities overseas, particularly in china. he and his
company received numerous awards from business associations in southern california. he has
erved on the boards of the ketchum downtown ymca, southern california regional purchasing councils,
and asian business association.
mr. steven jarvis is ceo of the new regional technology alliance (rta) formed in partnership
between the university business center (ubc) at csu fresno and the technology, trade and commerce
agency of california. the rta is part of the statewide infrastructure that assists small companies,
minority businesses and emerging entrepreneurs to develop successful business strategies and
leverage a variety of public and private resources to grow and prosper in an increasingly
competitive global economy. for the 4 years prior to accepting the rta leadership position,
mr. jarvis was the president of johnston & company’s technology investment division where
he was responsible for all management consulting engagements in the san joaquin valley,
perating out of the firm’s office in visalia. clients included the milken institute,
he great valley center, the ubc and the fresno economic opportunities commission.
prior to focusing his efforts on building sustainable economic growth in the central valley,
mr. jarvis had a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. he served
6 years on the governor’s staff as director of technology commercialization policy and
programs and 20 years in various management positions with a los angeles based multinational,
fortune 100 electronics and transportation corporation. mr. jarvis received a bs in electrical
engineering from the state university of ny and an mba from the anderson graduate school of
management at unm. he has certificates from harvard in strategic and competitive management
and from the brookings institute for government operations..
mr. c. jim chen is a part-time professor in the department of business administration at hlu.
he is a cpa and the owner of c. jim chen accountancy corporation, well known in the chinese
business community in southern california. professor chen received his master of science in
accounting and information system from ucla anderson graduate school of management. he has
over 30 years’ extensive experience in accounting and finance and has helped many companies
better control their costs, improve their business and financial performance, and comply with
federal and state laws in accounting and finance..
